Access Control Options Explained

The traditional method of controlling who has access to your home is with a lock and key. However, these methods are now quite basic and antiquated - now homes need to have an alarm security system at a minimum to be able to qualify as truly controlling access to the inner sanctum. Access control options used to be numbered keypads - now they have almost as much variety as in alarm security systems. How do you know which option is right for you?

Home Security or Multiple-User Office Environment?

Some access control options used in conjunction with alarm security systems are suitable only for a small population of users, while others are suitable for many hundreds of people to be set up for access. Pacific Security Technology can help you identify which will particular access control model will suit your needs best, in a free consultation.

Standalone keypads

These numbered keypads are now created to be extremely weatherproof and rugged. Many systems can programmed with over 50 unique codes - but you shouldn't let that tempt you into leaving the code for an old boyfriend or the plumbers on the system. If someone enters your house with a code from the keypad, the alarm security system will not go off. You should delete a code and issue anyone that needs one with a new (temporary) code.

Magnetic stripe readers

Magnetic stripe readers are more suitable for office environments. They remove the burden of tracking which numbers are authorised to have access and deleting numbers for old employees - you can simply require that a magnetic striped card be returned at the end of employment. These can also be used in conjunction with alarm security systems.

Fingerprint readers

These are suitable for use in conjunction with home alarm security systems, or small office alarm security systems for a restricted access area. They aren't practical for large volumes of users.

Proximity card/tag readers

These will sense the approach of an authorised card from a distance, so users need not pull their card or tag out of a pocket to avoid setting off the alarm security system. Again, they are mostly used in office environments.

Access control can be complicated, but with a free consultation from Pacific Security Technology, it all becomes so easy. Contact us for your free consultation today!
